Signs Your Attic Needs a Top-Up

Attics rarely fail all at once. These are the signs an existing attic has fallen behind current targets.

Ice Damming at the Eaves

Heat escaping through thin or compressed insulation melts roof snow.

Uneven Temperatures & Rising Bills

Upstairs rooms that run hot in summer and cold in winter often sit under an attic. Older loose-fill or thin batt insulation installed decades ago typically sits well below current targets.

Visible Thin or Patchy Coverage

Joists visible through the insulation, or bare patches near the hatch and eaves.

Our Process

How We Assess an Existing Attic

1

Measure current depth

We check depth at several points across the attic, since coverage is rarely even after years of settling.

2

Check for compression and gaps

We look for areas where insulation has been walked on, disturbed, or pushed aside around storage or wiring.

3

Confirm ventilation is clear

Soffit and ridge vents are checked before adding depth, since blocked venting causes problems once the attic is topped up.

4

Add matching or compatible material

We blow in additional cellulose or fiberglass to bring the attic up to the R-60 target.

Topping up vs starting fresh

When a Top-Up Works and When It Does Not

If existing insulation is dry, evenly distributed, and simply thin, we can usually blow additional material directly on top of it, which is faster and less disruptive than a full removal. If it is wet, compressed unevenly, pest-affected, or contaminated, we recommend removal before adding new insulation, since blowing more material over a damaged layer just buries the problem. Some attic upgrades are also a good time to add a radiant barrier alongside the added depth, which we can discuss during the on-site assessment.

Attic Insulation Upgrade Cost in Ottawa

Attic top-ups use the same blown-in material and labour as a first-time install, so the sourced range applies. Your price depends on how much added depth is needed and how much of the existing layer is usable.

Ottawa Insulation Experts provides professional attic insulation upgrades and top-ups throughout Ottawa, Ontario. This service is for homeowners whose attic already has some insulation but has fallen behind current targets, thinned out over time, or was never brought up to the depth an older home needs. It is different from a first-time install: we work with what is already there instead of starting from bare joists. We measure current depth, check for compression or moisture, and add blown-in cellulose or fiberglass to close the gap to the Ontario Building Code's R-60 attic target for the Ottawa area.

Attic Insulation Upgrade FAQs

How do I know if I need a top-up instead of a full install?

If your attic already has a layer of insulation, even an uneven or thin one, it is a top-up candidate. We measure depth and condition during the free assessment and tell you exactly what is needed.

Can new insulation be blown directly over old insulation?

In most cases yes, as long as the existing layer is dry and free of pests or contamination. If it is not, we recommend removing it first rather than covering up a problem.

Will topping up my attic stop ice damming?

Adding depth and sealing air leaks reduces the heat loss that drives ice damming, since less warm air escapes through the attic floor to melt roof snow from underneath.

Do you mix cellulose and fiberglass when topping up?

We generally match or use a compatible material to the existing insulation so the finished attic performs evenly, and we will tell you which option fits your attic during the assessment.

Is a radiant barrier worth adding during an upgrade?

It can be a useful addition alongside a depth top-up in certain attics. We will walk through whether it makes sense for your roof during the on-site visit rather than adding it by default.
